Meet Our Team

Henry James

I have been competing at National and International level in Triathlon/Duathlon for 10+ years, and will be coming up to 5 years of helping others within the sport as a coach in the coming year.

I have raced everything from sprint distance all the way to an Ironman, in both the age group and elite ranks.

My Role

I founded Proven Performance Coaching in 2020 and I coach many of our athletes. I'm experienced in training design, tapering and race preparation, tactical/technical aspects of racing, equipment choices and more.

I am based in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire having a valuable network of local complimentary service providers and which enables me to make referrals as required. If you are local, 1:1 coaching sessions can be arranged.

Tom Hartwell

Undertaking a coaching scholarship whilst part of the University of Leeds Cycling Club has led me into supporting many athletes; my pursuit of coaching now enables me to share my passion for cycling and endurance sport.

I personally race all disciplines of cycling, and have strong backgrounds in Road and MTB. This translates into my coaching as I always endorse getting stuck into races, and trying different events to find weakness' we can work on.

My Role

I've been coaching athletes for three years, with a mix of physical and technical preparation.

I put a focus on working closely with athletes to make sure they can achieve the goals we set out and perform to the highest level possible.

David James

I'm a former athlete, competing in three Junior World Championships as a Modern Pentathlete. I've worked in high performance sport for many years, most recently holding an executive role at the University of Gloucestershire.

I'm a professor in sports and exercise science, with expertise in endurance and multi-disciplinary sport. I have a PhD in Exercise Physiology, having published widely on respiratory and cardiovascular physiology, athlete assessment and training science.

My Role

I contribute to the training science that our coaches use and undertake athlete assessments.

I consult with athletes, providing innovative training guidance based on current evidence and results of their assessments and performances. I lead the evaluation of our approaches, ensuring our athletes get the best possible experience and outcomes.

Hamish Strachan

I have been hooked on cycling since I was 14 years old, with sportives turning quickly to riding competitively -- to this day, I am the youngest to have completed the Three Pistes Sportive.

I first raced in the junior tour of Ireland, landing a place on Zappi Racing Team after training through lockdown 2020. I've had my fair share of crashes, and many races and UCI events and a broken pelvis later I am now training and racing in Spain.

My Role

As I continue to gain experience I would like to pass on my knowledge to others, helping athletes balance training and nutrition to get the most out of their performance whilst keeping cycling fun throughout their sporting journey.
