Lactate Testing
We offer lactate threshold assessments for those looking to get the most out of their training.

Lactate Threshold Assessments are carried out by Professor David James (BSc Sports Science, PhD Exercise Physiology).

The Lactate Threshold Assessment includes a pre-test consultation, on the day testing, and post-test analysis. The assessment can be carried out at a suitable premesis of your choice if you are local to us or at our studio in Cheltenham.

Cost: £100
There are various methods of measuring an athlete's response to exercise.
Lactate threshold assessments have persisted as a quick and accessible means of accurately identifying the intensity domains (or zones) of an individual athlete -- marked by the work rate, which translates into running speed, or power produced when cycling.

Compared to other methods, it has been validated as a less invasive and less time consuming technique whilst providing the same outcomes. For example, other testing can involve measurements taken at different work rates over several days, others requiring direct measurement of activity response through muscle biopsies, arterio-venous blood sampling, and even use of extremely expensive magnetic resonance imaging equipment which isn't accessible nor suitable for cycling or running.
Why is this useful?
A high proportion of the research into endurance sport has focused on determining an individual’s training intensity. This demonstrates the importance of knowing the insights a Lactate Threshold Assessment provides. Adaptation to training is highly dependent on knowing training intensities, and therefore to optimise training they have to be identified.

What happens during an assessment?
This assessment is conducted in a single session utilising a progressive exercise protocol. It is conducted using typica cycling/running ergometry and involves an increasing work rate at set intervals throughout the session. Work rate is then plotted against the measured results of heart rate and lactate, allowing specific training zones to be calculated. The athlete and coach can then apply this information to inform future training decisions.
“My lactate threshold session was very professionally organised and performed. Great explanation throughout the test and felt well informed. Very detailed feedback after.” -- Natasha
